Otter family playing
One of my favourite places to look for otters in the Scottish island of Islay. I know one or two quiet locations where I can usually find at least one otter. On this occasion I was walking along a stretch of coastline overlooking the Sound of Islay. I had already found one otter but had soon lost sight of it as it swam away from me around a small promontory. I paused for some coffee and then moved on down the coast. Suddenly I was aware of an otter standing on some seaweed covered rocks looking out across the water and calling. It looked like a young otter and was certainly making the high pitched peeping noise that they use to keep in contact with their mother. I crept closer and saw that there were two more otters swimming in to join the first. It soon became apparent that I had found a mother with two immature youngsters. Once all reunited they began a very boisterous game of fighting and rolling in the seaweed. On and off it lasted for over thirty minutes and I sat spellbound watching. |
