About Mick Durham

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my Diary.

I have been a professional wildlife photographer for about ten years but have been taking photographs for a lot longer. I bought my first SLR camera when I was still a student in the late seventies. At the time I was training to be an outdoor education teacher and so most of my photography was of climbing and canoeing, mountains and rivers. However my passion for wildlife and in particular birdwatching soon began to influence what I photographed and slowly a wildlife photographer was born.

Like many keen birdwatchers I always kept a diary of what birds I had seen, what trips I had undertaken and now as a professional photographer this has turned in to much more of a working document. I now record details of photographic trips, ideas about potential locations and any other information that might be useful to me. Thanks to the digital revolution I now no longer have to make notes of how I took particular photographs – what shutter speed I used and so on – a task I often neglected. These days all that information is recorded within the digital files on my camera.

Above all though my diary helps me to remember all the fun and frustration I have trying to take pictures of animals and birds. I hope to be able to share some of those experiences through the pages of my web diary. Each month I will add a short article entitled ‘The story behind the picture’ where I will describe how a particular picture came about. Images in the gallery that have been included in this feature will have a link to the relevant Diary page. New images will be featured here before being added to the galleries and I will also discuss the equipment I am using.

I hope you enjoy these pages. Please revisit regularly to see what’s new!
